One Lovely Blog Award – and other blog recommendations

When I was nominated for the One Lovely Blog by Terry Tyler http://terrytyler59.blogspot.co.uk/, my first thought was—who would want to know 7 facts about me?  Apart from possibly my best friend?  That’s something I think occurs to most people when they start a blog: will anyone want to read it?  Don’t you get miffed by those occasional bloggers who preface their latest post with something like—‘Yes, I know I promised you another post soon but I’ve been so busy, here’s something to keep you going, sorry it’s been so long!’—do they think anyone cares, our lives the emptier for lack of their posts?!  But, given that you lovely people in the blogging community do wish to share, I shall throw such hats as I possess into the ring, and hope you find something of interest!

(The rules: link back to the blog of the person who nominated you, share 7 facts about yourself, and nominate 15 blogs that you particularly like, or fewer if you can’t think of 15.  If I’ve nominated your blog, please don’t feel obliged to take part if you don’t want to, but if you do, thank you!)

7 things about me

1. I was a very shy, reclusive, bookish teenager, and spent my entire teenage years either watching TV with the curtains closed or reading books.  The downside of this was that not only did I never go out on a date, I hardly even had any girlfriends, because I was too shy to go out.  The upside was that I became very well read, which never did a person any harm, I think.

2. I love Jane Austen, and have read her books countless times.  I belong to my local branch of the Jane Austen Society, and sometimes we’ve attended photo shoots or historical fairs where we have to appear in costume—such fun, especially when we get the opportunity to flirt like the Bennett sisters with soldiers in Regency uniform!  I’m the one with the fan in the pic, from our local paper.

3. Family is very important to me.  I have over 25 cousins (some of whom have now shuffled off this mortal coil), and my immediate family are very close.  My sister lives a long way away from me, so we’re in touch most days.  My brother is one of the good guys.  Our mum has Alzheimer’s, and has lived in a care home for over 2 years now.  This is very hard on all of us, especially our 85-year old dad, but we all stick together and try to do the best we can.  One good thing to have come out of the situation is that we have all got to know our dad better.  I miss my mum a lot, we all do.

4. I am a qualified roulette and blackjack dealer.  In the 1980s I worked for the Ritz Casino, and have dealt the cards to, amongst others, the Sultan of Bahrain, Jackie Collins, Al Pacino and the late, great Mickey Rooney.

5. I love American crime series, especially Law & Order, (and all its spinoffs, e.g. Special Victims Unit, Criminal Intent, L&O Los Angeles), and Homicide: Life on the Street, in particular.  I remember seeing Sir Alan Sugar saying that he loves them too, and has all the box sets, as do I!  They do cross-over episodes, with one set of detectives visiting the other, for example when Detective Munch goes from Baltimore to—oh, sorry, being a nerd!

Law and Order

6. I am also a big fan of Gilbert & Sullivan.  When I was a teenager my dad took me to see Patience performed by the D’Oyly Carte at Sadler’s Wells.  I was hooked.  I came home with the libretti and learned all the words.  My other particular favourites are HMS Pinafore and Iolanthe.  I’ve seen many performances, both amateur and professional, including The Pirates of Penzance starring the rather hunky Oliver Tobias!

7. Like my sister, my 7th point is that I love living by the sea.  In fact, I live over the road from it.  My sister and I both lived here for a few years, and we had many happy times, and lovely walks along the coastline.  We used to love to walk along the cliff top to the lighthouse and back—we used to call it the Virginia Woolf Walk, get it!?! And here’s a pic of me and my brother at the seaside.

My blog nominations are some I’ve come across on Twitter, or that have been suggested by @TerryTyler4 as she had more than 15 she wanted to nominate, so we’ve shared them!  They’re an assortment of different types – book blogs, writers’ blogs, and just general interest.
